what is white balance?
I sort of understand the concept but not really. And why do people say auto white balance is bad?
Different types of light have different “color temperatures”. White balance consists of adjusting the relative strengths of the red, green, and blue channels in the digital picture so that white appears white. If your white balance is set for daylight, for example, pictures taken under incandescent lights will have an overall yellowish cast. Back in the days of film photography, you had to either buy film of the appropriate color balance, or adjust it with filters.
The problem with auto color balance is that it can be fooled by a scene with a strong dominant color. For example, a person photographed in front of a red wall in a wide shot is apt to wind up with bluish skin tone, as the camera’s rather limited “brain” tries to average the scene to a neutral gray.
